About Akeelah and the Bee

An eleven year old girl from impoverished South Los Angeles discovers her gift for spelling.  Despite her mother’s (Angela Bassett) reservations, Akeelah (Keke Palmer) enters a local spelling bee.  Akeelah is tutored along the way by the eccentric yet plainspoken teacher Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne); her school principal Mr. Welch (Curtis Armstrong) and various neighbors.  Akeelah’s amazing gift takes her all the way to the National Spelling Bee, uniting and inspiring her community with her determination and courage.  This film also features Dalia Phillips as Ms. Cross.
