About Brokeback Mountain

The wild, sweeping landscapes of Wyoming and Texas provide a dramatically contrasting background for the story of a lifelong love affair between two cowboys. Early one summer morning in 1963, Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) meet while lining up for jobs as sheepherders for local rancher Joe Aguirre (Randy Quaid) in Signal, Wyoming. Aguirre sends the two to work together up on remote Brokeback Mountain. The men develop a close friendship and eventually a deeper intimacy, but at the end of summer the two come down from Brokeback and go their separate ways, returning to the conventional lives that society expects of them.

Ennis remains in Wyoming to marry his sweetheart, Alma (Michelle Williams) while Jack catches the eye of Texas rodeo queen Lureen Newsome (Anne Hathaway). Jack and Lureen marry and take jobs in her father's business. Both men have children. One day, Alma brings Jack a postcard from Jack, who is on his way to visit Wyoming. When the old friends meet, it becomes immediately clear that time, marriage and children have not erased their feelings for one another. They keep their secret bond alive, contriving to meet several times a year. The concepts of trust, commitment and fidelity are explored in new ways in their increasingly complex lives. This film is based on the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx and is directed by Academy Award-winning Ang Lee.
