About Illusion

While spending his last days viewing the films he has devoted his life to creating, dying filmmaking legend Donald Baines (Kirk Douglas) finds that he has many regrets over personal sacrifices, especially his self-imposed isolation from family and friends. Most painful is the memory of his rejection of his illegitimate son Christopher (Michael A. Goorjian) decades ago.

Donald is awakened one night by a ghostly visitation of a favorite film editor who has been dead for more than 35 years. He finds himself transported to an old movie house, where Stan informs Donald that he has come to help and will show him three films, each from a different period of Christopher's life.

The first vision depicts a teenaged Chris, desperately in love for the first time, with a girl he has seen only from afar. Overcome by the romance, Christopher risks everything for a chance to spend time with the girl. However, a nagging voice, whom Chris believes to be the father who deserted him, echoes in his mind, telling him he is unworthy of the girl.

The second vision finds Christopher in his twenties, where he again encounters the love he lost in the first vision. His life takes a difficult turn, however, and he is again torn from her. At last Donald sees Chris as a mature man, weary from a disappointing life and looking for what may be his last chance at love, but again feeling haunted by what he imagines is his father's disapproval. Facing his most difficult artistic choice, Donald Baines receives the opportunity to make a difference - to direct Christopher's life for the better. But after such a long time, can he really effect a change, or has it all been an illusion?
