About Memoirs of a Geisha

Based on the best seller by Arthur Golden, the film tells the story of Chiyo, who in 1929, at the age of nine, was sold by her impoverished family into a geisha house. Chiyo suffers cruelty at the hands of the vindictive older courtesan Hatsumomo, who is jealous of the child’s stunning beauty.  Eventually, Chiyo is rescued by Hatsumomo’s rival, Mameha, under whose tutelage she blossoms into the geisha Sayuri (Ziyi Zhang).  Sayuri masters all the social and artistic skills she needs to flourish in her society.  She enters a world of privilege, wealth and intrigue, captivating the most powerful men of the day.  All the while, she is haunted by desire for the man she loves but cannot have (Ken Watanabe).  The film takes viewers back to the heyday of Tokyo ’s Ginza district, a mysterious and exotic world, which, along with Sayuri’s way of life, is swept away forever with the advent of World War II.
