'Wedding
Crashers' Takes Box Office Cake With First Place Finish 8/1/05
$20.5 Million Weekend Pushes Film's Gross To $116.1 Million
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Thanks to its continuing strong
holds, the New Line Cinema comedy "Wedding Crashers" pulled off
the extremely rare feat of ascending to the top of the box office chart
for the first time in its third weekend of release with a $20.5 million
gross this past weekend. The figure pushes the $40 million-budgeted film's
cumulative gross to $116.1 million since its July 15 debut.
Wedding Crashers ascended to the top of the box office chart this
weekend (besting three new wide release films) thanks to another unusually
small 20% drop from its previous weekend's second place performance. The
feat marks the first time since 1998's "Something About Mary"
that a wide-release film has won the box office for the first time later
than its second week of release.
"This movie has become a phenomenon, and it shows just how hungry
moviegoers are for an original and truly funny comedy in a summer of
remakes," says New Line production president Toby Emmerich. "You
can't have this kind of success unless your film appeals to a broad
audience and you're getting repeat business."
The outrageous comedy "Wedding Crashers" stars Owen Wilson
and Vince Vaughn as divorce mediators and lifelong friends who have never
met a wedding they couldn't get themselves into. Guided by a secret set of
wedding crashing "rules," the pair find their way into a
different wedding and different bridesmaid's heart every week. But when
they crash the social event of the season, one of them falls for the
engaged daughter (Rachel McAdams) of an influential and eccentric
politician (Christopher Walken) and decides to break the "rules"
in pursuit of her. This leads to a wild weekend at her family's palatial
estate where the ultimate "Crashers" quickly find themselves in
way over their heads. The film is directed by David Dobkin.
