"Toy Story 2," another box-office hit by the producers of
"Toy Story" and "A Bug's Life," is an action-packed,
animated adventure that tells the story of Sheriff Woody (voiced by Tom
Hanks, "The
Da Vinci Code," "Castaway," "Saving Private
Ryan"). When Andy (John Morris, "Toy Story," "The
Nightmare Before Christmas"), the little boy who owns Woody, goes off
to summer camp, Woody is in bad shape: He has a torn arm and is feeling
neglected because Andy left him behind to collect dust on a shelf. An
unscrupulous toy collector, Al McWhiggin (Wayne Knight, "Rat
Race"), acquires Woody, repairs him and is ready to sell him for
display in a Japanese toy museum.
Woody is at first delighted at the prospect and discovers he is part of
a set of toys called The Roundup Gang which includes a cowgirl named
Jessie (Joan Cusack, "School of Rock," "High
Fidelity," "Runaway Bride"), a horse named Bullseye and a
prospector named Stinky Pete (Kelsey Grammer, TV's "Frasier").
Woody was even a TV star in the 1950s. Meanwhile, Buzz Lightyear (Tim
Allen, "Galaxy Quest," "The Santa Clause," "TV's
"Home Improvement") and Andy's other toys mount a bold rescue
mission and venture across town to retrieve Woody.
Randy Newman, who has won one Oscar and received ten Oscar nominations
in music categories since 1985, was nominated in 2000 for "When She
Loved Me," sung in the movie by Joan Cusack's character.
The film's stellar voice cast includes Tom Hanks as Sheriff Woody, Tim
Allen as Buzz Lightyear of Star Command/Buzz Lightyear No. 2, Joan Cusack
as Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl, Kelsey Grammer as Stinky Pete the
Prospector, Don Rickles ("Toy Story") as Mr. Potato Head, the
late Jim Varney ("Ernest" series of movies) as Slinky Dog,
Wallace Shawn as Rex, John Ratsenberger (TV's "Cheers") as Hamm,
Annie Potts ("Toy Story") as Bo Peep, Wayne Knight as Al
McWhiggin (Chicken Man), John Morris as Andy Davis, Laurie Metcalf as Mrs.
Davis and Yard Sale Woman, Estelle Harris as Mrs. Potato Head, R. Lee
Ermey as Sarge and Jodi Benson as Tour Guide Barbie.
The 1999 animated feature was directed by Ash Brannon, John Lasseter
("Toy Story," "A Bug's Life") and Lee Unkrich. The
film was written by Andrew Stanton ("Monsters, Inc.," "A
Bug's Life"), Rita Hsiao ("Mulan"), Doug Chamberlain and
Chris Webb, from a story by Lasseter, Brannon, Peter Doctor and Stanton.
The film is a production Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney
