Talk about your rude awakenings!
This comedy animation opens to little woodland creatures stirring from
their long winter’s hibernation only to discover that while they were
sleeping, suburbia has moved into their forest.
The animals wonder especially at the tall green wall that has
mysteriously sprung up. Making a
timely and opportunistic appearance is traveling raccoon con artist RJ (Bruce
Willis), who explains the wall and reveals to the bewildered creatures the
wonders that exist just “over the hedge.” RJ is thrilled with the human
treasures – i.e., garbage – that are theirs for the taking, but the native
animals are wary. It seems that Vern
the tortoise (Garry Shandling) once had a very unfortunate encounter with some
boys that has left the community terrified of humans.
Undaunted, RJ continues to encourage the animals, who timidly venture
over the hedge and discover a whole new world full of delicious refuse.
As they get increasing bold, however, their happy life in the woods
appears to be in jeopardy. The film
is based on the popular comic strip by Michael Fry and T. Lewis. Rounding out the voice ensemble are William Shatner as Ozzie the melodramatic possum, who plays dead with his own special flair; Avril Levigne is Ozzie’s daughter Heather; Steve Carell is Hammy the hyperactive squirrel; Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy are a porcupine couple with many prickly little mouths to feed; Wanda Sykes is sassy Stella the skunk; Nick Nolte is a bear named Vincent and Gene Wilder is Norbert the Owl. On the other side of the hedge, Omid Djalili is a spoiled housecat ironically named Tiger; Allison Janney plays Gladys, the local homeowners’ association president who disapproves of wildlife in the subdivision (it’s not in the covenants); and Thomas Haden Church is The Verminator, hired by Gladys to rid the neighborhood of the woodland creatures turned garbage junkies.
