About Strangers With Candy
An eccentric comedy prequel to the hit cable series, Strangers with Candy stars Amy Sedaris as Jerri Blank, a 46 year old former drug-addict prostitute who has just been sprung from prison. Jerri decides to get a new start in some old familiar surroundings and returns home to Mom and Dad. She is surprised to find that some things have changed during her 32 year absence. Mom died; dad remarried, fathered a child and at some point fell into a coma. Undeterred, Jerri moves in.
Determined to start afresh where things went wrong for her, Jerri enters Flatpoint High as a freshman. But the more things change, the more they stay the same. Jerri encounters the usual mélange of dysfunctional school officials, including the sleek Principal Onyx Blackman (Greg Hollimon), and the closet (so he thinks) homosexual science teacher Chuck Noblet (Stephen Colbert), who is having a torrid affair with art instructor Mr. Geoffrey Jellineck (Paul Dinello).
During these best years of her life, Jerri faces down the eternally intimidating Cool Kids; develops a relationship with popular jock Brason; and joins Chuck Noblet's Science Fair team, the Fig Neutrons. In this latter endeavor, Jerri and teammates Tammi Littlenut and Megawatti Sacarnaputri uncover a Science Bowl scandal. Through it all, our intrepid heroine has to put up with her exasperating half-brother Derrick and her resentful stepmother Sarah, who is only tolerating Jerri because the doctor feels her presence may coax her father out of his coma. No one ever said high school was easy.
Also stars Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Chu, Dan Hedaya, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ian Holm, Allison Janney, Kristen Johnston, Sarah Jessica Parker, Deborah Rush, Carlo Alban, Maria Thayer, Chris Pratt, Elisabeth Harnois, Joseph Cross, David Pasquesi, Alexis Dziena and Justin Theroux.
