Escaping from an unhappy home life and the superficiality he sees all around him, fringe kid Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) attempts to carve out an identity for himself as an in-your-face drag racer. When the cops get hold of him, Sean faces a tough choice: jail time, or moving in with Dad - a gruff, career military guy whom Sean hardly knows. He chooses Dad and the two begin life together in a cramped apartment in a low-rent district of Tokyo.
Sean goes from fringe status to certified outsider - gaijin - and feels totally alone in a land where he does not understand the complex system of customs and codes of honor. A fellow displaced American, Twinkie (Bow Wow), introduces Sean to the Far East version of drag racing known as drift racing; like drag racing on a steroid-meth cocktail. On his first drift, Sean unknowingly takes on the local king pin of the sport, the formidable D.K. (yep, that's right - Drift King), who also happens to have ties to the Japanese crime syndicate Yakuza. Sean must pay off the resulting debt to D.K. (Brian Tee) by various escapades in the Tokyo underworld. Things go from bad to worse with D.K. when Sean falls for the drift champ's girlfriend.
