About The Libertine
The
film chronicles the genius and debauchery of the second Earl of Rochester, poet
John Wilmot (Johnny Depp). Wilmot's life is explored through a series of
adventures in London, including a passionate romance with young actress
Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton) and the authorship of a bawdy play, which
makes a laughing stock of the very man who commissioned it, none other than King
Charles II (John Malkovich). This proverbial last straw leads to the Earl's
banishment, and he drinks himself into an early grave, later earning posthumous
praise for his body of work. Laurence Dunmore makes his directorial debut with
this film, successfully recreating an authentic 17th century London by combining
the luster of the court of the Restoration with the city's seedier aspect.
