About The
Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio
Necessity
is the mother of invention, and necessity is what led Evelyn Ryan (Julianne
Moore) to enter a jingle contest in the 1950’s.
Evelyn is a devoted housewife and mother of ten, facing the usual
financial struggles – car repairs, mortgage payments, mounting bills – with
her working-class husband Leo (Woody Harrelson).
Evelyn wins the lucrative cash prize for her jingle, and that is just the
beginning. More contests and more
cash payments come her way, and as their financial struggles are alleviated, Leo
becomes threatened by his wife’s success.
Based on a true story.
