About The Producers
Theatrical producer Max Biaylstock (Nathan Lane) has lost his Midas touch,
and now has flop after flop to his credit. In a devious attempt to turn lemons
into lemonade, Max and his meek accountant Leo Bloom (Matthew Broderick) hatch a
scheme to turn Max's slump to their mutual advantage. All they need to do is
raise way more money than they need to produce a sure-fire flop. When it bombs,
none of the investors will expect any return, and Max and Leo can pocket the
difference. To pull it off, they need the "worst play ever written,"
something so bad, in such poor taste, so totally offensive it will close on
opening night.
For the ultimate bad play, Max and Leo engage ultimate bad playwright,
neo-Nazi and pigeon enthusiast Franz Liebkind (Will Ferrell), who pens the
musical "Springtime for Hitler." The tasteless show features joyous,
frolicking Nazis and stars Ulla (Uma Thurman), a Swedish
secretary/receptionist/show-girl wannabe. Imagine Max and Leo's surprise when
the "ultimate bad play" becomes the toast of the town. Even Max's flop
scheme flopped. The film is based on the award-winning, record breaking Broadway
hit, which is in turn based on Mel Brooks's 1968 motion picture comedy of the
same name.
