The episode begins with the crash of Ajira Airways Flight 316, a
transpacific flight piloted by Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey), on the small
island off the coast of the main island, where the Dharma Initiative Hydra
Station is located. Lapidus crash lands the plane on a runway that was
built by the native population of the island, known as the Others, and the
survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 (as seen in "The Glass
Ballerina"). Afterwards, crash survivor and previous leader of the
Others Ben Linus (Michael Emerson) begins to travel to the main island. He
is followed by Frank and survivor Sun-Hwa Kwon (Yunjin Kim), who believes
her husband Jin-Soo Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim) is on the main island. After
reaching a group of canoes, Sun knocks Ben out with an oar and travels
with Frank to the abandoned barracks of the Dharma Initiative. There,
Christian Shephard (John Terry) shows Sun and Frank a picture of new
recruits to the Dharma Initiative from 1977, including Jack Shephard
(Matthew Fox), Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) and Hugo "Hurley"
Reyes (Jorge Garcia). He also tells her that Jin is with them in 1977.
In 1977, following the events of the previous episode "LaFleur",
James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway) explains to Jack, Kate and
Hurley the situation regarding Dharma and the shift in time. James has the
three of them join the Dharma Initiative as new recruits, with help from
Juliet Burke (Elizabeth Mitchell) who fakes the necessary documentation,
after finding out that Amy and Horace's baby is named Ethan. Meanwhile,
Jin travels to the Dharma Initiative Flame Station because he believes
that its occupant, Radzinsky (Eric Lange), will know if Flight 316 crashed
on the island. There is no evidence of a plane crashing on the island as
the plane is in 2007. Soon, an alarm is set off and Jin finds Sayid Jarrah
(Naveen Andrews) wandering in the jungle. After a brief moment of reunion,
Jin acts as if Sayid were a Hostile as Radzinsky approaches Jin from
behind. Radzinsky belives Sayid to be one of the Others and Jin is unable
to speak to Sayid alone. James is summoned to the Flame and has no choice
but to pretend Sayid is one of the Others and lock him in a jail cell at
the barracks.
Later in the evening, Jack visits James and Juliet's house, to discuss
the situation with Sayid. James tells Jack that he is in charge of the
situation and that he has different approach to leadership than Jack had
with the survivors of Oceanic 815: James prefers to carefully plan out his
actions as opposed to Jack, who simply "reacted" to what
happened. Jack confirms to be "relieved" by this transfer of
power, as the constant responsibility of leading the survivors of Flight
815 was a recurring conflict to him. Meanwhile, at the jail, a young Ben
Linus (Sterling Beaumon) brings Sayid a sandwich. After asking Sayid if he
was a Hostile, he introduces himself as Ben.
