The
Office 3/19/09 Episode "New Boss" Recap
3/20/09
Michael wants to throw a big party to celebrate his 15th anniversary of
being at Dunder Mifflin. His plans, however, are thrown into disarray
after he introduces the new Vice President of the company, Charles Miner (Idris
Elba). Michael and Charles initially got off to a good start when they
first met in New
York, but Michael becomes unnerved when Charles exhibits
a no-nonsense attitude towards Michael and the rest of the office, thus
making Michael not feel like his own boss.
Taking advice from CFO David Wallace, Michael tries to become better
acquainted with Charles, but is unsuccessful. Michael makes a number of
failed attempts to contact David Wallace. When Charles catches the Party
Planning Committee planning Michael's anniversary party during office
hours, he decides to dissolve the committee and cancel Michael's party.
This becomes a final straw for Michael and he decides to drive to New York
to talk to David Wallace in person.
Meanwhile, Jim comes in wearing a tuxedo as a response to a memo
written by Dwight regarding the dress code. His introduction to Charles is
awkward as Jim has to explain why he wore a tuxedo to work, though Charles
is unamused. Jim's activity throughout the day comes under intense
scrutiny by Charles. When Jim tries to smooth things over with Charles,
Charles questions the necessity of Jim's position as Assistant Regional
Manager before stripping him of that title. When Charles leaves, Jim tries
to say goodbye, with no response. Jim jokes that his career is potentially
over.
Angela and Kelly develop crushes on Charles. They immediately show
their liking to Charles in front of him, leaving him somewhat
uncomfortable. At the end of the day, Kelly puts on more makeup to ask
Charles out, but he had already left. Kelly runs out to the parking lot
where she finds Angela holding Charles' scarf and starts chasing her.
Angela mentions afterward that Charles deserves better than Kelly.
In New York, Michael finally manages to talk to David Wallace and
openly complains to him that he deserves more after being at Dunder
Mifflin for 15 years. David agrees to fund an anniversary party for him
and personally attend it, but Michael then abruptly announces his
resignation from the company and walks out, stunning his boss.
"New Boss" is the twentieth episode of the fifth season of
the television series The Office, and the show's ninety-second episode
overall. The episode aired in the United States on March 19, 2009, on NBC
at 9 p.m. EST.
